Memorial Day is a National Holiday which we celebrate on the last Monday of May. It is a time for us to remember our veterans and honor them by going to the cemetery and placing flowers on their graves. Millions of us do it every year, but few of know the history of the day.
Originally called “Decoration Day” Memorial Day was first celebrated after the Civil War. General John A. In 1868, set aside May 5 of each year to honor Union Solders by placing flowers on their graves. That day was.
Confederate veterans soon followed with a holiday of their own. Both holidays were originally celebrated on different days, however around the beginning of the 20th century the holidays were merged into one holiday which we now celebrate as Memorial day.
Each year, we visit cemeteries across America to decorate the graves of veterans who have served this great nation with American flags and flowers. Of all the holidays we celebrate… Memorial Day is one of the most relevant and one of the most valuable, for it serves to remind us that Freedom; that intangible thing that we as Americans value above all else is not free.
In conclusion, as we spend this three day weekend honoring our veterans. We also spend time with family and friends and we enjoy good food and good times.
Let us also celebrate our freedom, for it is a rare and beautiful thing.
